Gynecologic Teaching Associates

Tomorrow in my health assessment class we have to do breast, pelvic and rectal exams. At the beginning of the semester for a brief second we were afraid that we would be doing them on each other. Turns out we do them on GTAs (gynecologic or genitourinary teaching associates). These are people who are professionally trained and paid (well) to teach students how to perform breast, pelvic, and rectal exams. They teach you how to do it on themselves by themselves. Our models (both male and female) apparently come from Johns Hopkins. How in the world you find people who are willing to do this is beyond me. I mean one pelvic or rectal exam would be enough for me, let alone four or five in a row. I'm guessing the money is really good. I was searching on the internet for info on GTAs. I didn't really find anything about the money, but I found this interesting article from the Village Voice written by a medical student about his experience with a GTA.

Yes, that would definitely make for a long day if you had to constantly give yourself a rectal exam. I hope they don't take their work home with them.
